Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known by many as Clara Barton, was a savior to numerous soldiers during the Civil War. She was born on Christmas Day in the year 1821, in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Her father, Captain Stephen Barton, was a farmer and horse breeder who had previously served as a soldier. Her mother was a housewife who took care of Clara and her four brothers and sisters (Moran). Since Clara was the youngest of the children, her older siblings educated her. Her sister Sally taught her geography, and David coached her in athletics. Dorothy and Stephen taught her spelling and arithmetic, respectively (Moran). She volunteered to serve as a nurse for the regiment though she had no real training in the nursing business. The only real background she had was taking care of her brother David when she was only eleven. He had been badly injured in an accident, and Clara stayed by his side day and night (Johnson). This began her venture into the occupation of nursing. Because of her aid during the Civil War, Clara was often called The Angel of the battlefield. At the age of fifteen, Clara began a successful eighteen-year period of teaching (Karau). This was very important to her because she had always been extremely shy and timid. This new teaching career brought Clara out of her shell, making it easier for her to make the speeches and lectures that helped to start her business. Shortly before the war, she worked at the patent office in Washington. When Clara was forty years old, the war broke out. Knowing that nurses were urgently needed at the battlefield, she "broke the shackles and went into the field (Johnson). Though she would end up as a nurse for the soldiers, Clara truly began her service to the troops by collecting supplies and cooking for them. In 1862, she got government permission to accompany the sick transports in any direction, for the purpose of aiding the ill and the wounded (Hill). Barton showed courage, endurance and resourcefulness on the battlefield and gave sympathetic aid to many. To her, each soldier was an individual and merited the best possible treatment (Johnson). For four years after the war, Clara Barton supervised a Federal search for missing soldiers. She found over 13,000 soldiers who had been missing in action (Hill). She also delivered lectures on her war experiences, which were well received. She met Susan B. Anthony and began a long association with the suffrage movement. She also became acquainted with Frederick Douglass and became an activist for black rights (Marx).
