Chemist and scientist Joseph Priestley s education and early career were full of important decisions and promotions. He was born on March 13, 1733 in Yorkshire, England. He was the eldest of six children and his parents, being greatly religious, originally wanted him to join the ministry of the Dissenting church. In 1752, his parent s wishes came true when Priestley entered a new Dissenting Academy called Daventry, where he studied Hebrew, Chaldee, Syriac, and a little Arabic. In 1755, he left Daventry to become assistant minister to the independent Presbyterian congregation. Then in 1758, he again transferred to another congregation in Nantwich, Cheshire. There, he opened up a day school with 36 students where he provided the students with "philosophical instruments." He became a tutor in language and literature at Warrington Academy in 1761 and he also published the Rudiments of English Grammar. In 1762, Priestley was ordained a Dissenting minister and married Mary Wilkinson, age 18. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Priestley had four children, a daughter and three sons. Later, he enriched the curriculum of his school with works such as: Theory of Language and Universal Grammar, Chart of Biography, essay on a Course Liberal Education for Civil and Active Life, and lectures on History and General Policy. He received a degree of LL.D. by Edinburgh University in 1765. Priestley s life seemed to be going pretty well for him until the French Revolution, when his house was wrecked and his library and laboratory were destroyed. Because of this, he immigrated from England to the United States. Joseph Priestley s work as a scientist served a great benefit to humanity. In 1766, he was elected to membership in the prestigious Royal Society of London. He published The History and Present State of Electricity in 1767. Priestley discovered that charcoal conducted electricity and he noted the relationship between electricity and chemical change. He also reflected on the similarity between the processes of burning and respiration. Also in 1767, he was appointed minister of the Mill Hill Chapel.
