Technology shapes the world in which we live. The transfer of technology from one culture to another is what kept each culture growing. Technology can be transferred in many ways. The history of technological transfer is particularly interesting. In looking at the history of technology transfer, we can see that there are many common methods of transfer. Because of this, many similar methods of transfer were being used in different parts of the world. During the first 200 years of European contact with the natives of the Americas, technology transfer occurred between the interacting cultures through the same kinds of mechanisms that stimulated technology transfer between the regions of Asia and Africa.Religion has played a very large part in the transfer of technology both in the "Old World" and the "New World." In the Old World, the religion of Buddha was responsible for a large number of technological transfers. One technology that can be affiliated with the Buddhist religion, is the construction and repair of bridges. The Buddhists built these bridges because of a "pious duty." The bridges built by the Buddhists allowed travel "to the overland routes used for travel to India." "The most important invention associated with Buddhism, however, is the printed book"(Pacey 17). The printed book allowed information to be recorded and possibly transferred. New World technologies were also affected by religion. Much of the transfer of technology in America resulted from the Puritans encounters with Natives. There were many technology transfers in both directions: from the Europeans to the Natives and vice-versa. The Europeans provided much technology to the Indians including iron plows and other agricultural technology. The Indians taught the Europeans farming techniques and introduced the canoe. "Canoes are boats made of one piece of wood and are much in use among the farmers " Religion played an extremely important role in the transfer of technology in the Old World and the New World.Military conquest also played a large role in the transfer of technology in the New World and the Old World.
