King LearTheme of Blindness In Shakespeare s classic tragedy, King Lear, the most dominant theme isthat of blindness. Ordinarily defined as having difficulty or the inability to seethrough the eyes, in contrast, Shakespeare interprets blindness as not having ornot using discernment or judgment. It is seen as a mental fault that some of thecharacters in the play possess. King Lear, Gloucester, and Albany are threeprime examples of how their blindness caused them to make decisions that theywould eventually come to regret later on in the play. By virtue of King Lear s position in society, he presumably has the abilityto distinguish the good from the bad; unfortunately, his lack of insight hamperedthis. His initial act of blindness occurs in the beginning of the play when he wasdeceived by his two eldest daughters lies; soon afterwards, he was incapable ofseeing the reality of Cordelia s genuine love for him. Due to his lack of insight,Lear cannot see into other people s characters; therefore, he can never identifythem for who they truly are. Lear s blindness causes him to expel Cordelia andhis royal follower Kent, who was able to see Cordelia s true love for Lear andtried to protect her from his irrationality. Lear s words were, Out of my sight! . While Kent replied, See better, Lear, and let me still remain the true blank ofthine eye (1.1.159-161). When nothing else could be done to change Lear smind, banished Kent disguised himself as a servant in order to remain near hisking, proving once again Lear s blindness because of his inability to see Kent strue identity. As the play progresses, Lear s vision begins to clear when hestarts to realize how evil his two eldest daughters are and that Cordelia s reasonfor not flattering him was because her love for him was so great that she couldnot express it in words. Unfortunately it was too late, and his blindness endedup costing Cordelia her life, as well as his own. Although Lear can physically see, he is blind in the sense that he lacksinsight, understanding and direction.
