This book is about two factions of Jews, or the "chosen" people, in Williamsburg, New York, during World War II and its aftermath. Some Jews, the Hasids, are traditional, following a way of life that dates back hundreds and even thousands of years. Other Jews, although very religious, try to be more modern. Because of these differences, there is often conflict between the two factions. The author presents both factions in a sympathetic light. However, although the author tries to be as unbiased as possible, he is more favorable to the modern faction, as opposed to the traditional one.The traditional faction, or Hasids, came to New York from parts of Eastern Europe. They wear black hats, long black coats, black beards, and earlocks. In outward appearance and in some other practices, they are like the Amish, who lives in parts of Pennsylvania and other states. The Hasids speak Yiddish, rather than Hebrew or English, and obey dynastic rabbis, or tzaddiks, who trace their line from the founder of the Hasids, the Ba'al Shem Tov. Hasids are opposed to modern literature. Some books are not allowed to be read. They attend their own educational institutions, or yeshivas, and oppose attending modern universities. They are also opposed to the Zionist political movement, which seeks to establish the State of Israel, because they believe that the Jewish people should only settle in Israel when the Messiah comes. The role of women is diminished and subordinated. The modern, or orthodox, faction dresses in American-style clothes. They speak English, even in parts of their religious services, and use Hebrew rather than Yiddish. They are allowed to study modern literature, and attend secular universities. They favor the Zionist movement, which seeks the return of the Jewish people to Palestine, and the establishment of the State of Israel. The role of women is important and more equal. The author also uses events following the end of World War II to illustrate the differences between the factions. The slaughter of European Jews in the German concentration camps is revealed by American soldiers who liberate the camps. One could say that this horrible tragedy is evidence of God's abandonment of the Jewish people. However, the Hasids view the death of millions of Jews as God's will. The Hasids are opposed to affirmative efforts of the Zionists to prevent a slaughter of Jews in the future. They have a passive reaction to this tragedy. The Hasids oppose sending Jews to Palestine, because of their strictly religious views about the Messiah.
