B. N. Desai9/16/98American Literature Setting Essay The Effect of Setting in Edgar Allen Poe's Literature Edgar Allen Poe is an author who is known for his frightening stories and bizarre plots. Many of Poe's sinister stories can be attributed to an eerie setting. One such story is "The Fall of the House of Usher." Poe's excellent settings and environments compose much of the overall atmosphere of the story and influence his characters and readers. This would have been especially true in the time period in which Poe wrote. Poe's settings were more effective in their own time period because the settings were so current back then. Not only had readers not become desensitized to violence and death but Poe's settings were new and revolutionary. Poe's horrific settings were the first of their kind anyone had seen. It is not for nothing that Poe has been said to have invented the horror genre. Poe's settings were described in detail to provoke exactly the type of response that was necessary in a horror story. For example in "The Fall of the House of Usher"; "I found myself within view of the melancholy House of Usher upon sight of it I found myself pervaded with an insufferable sense of gloom." (Poe 194) Those are strong words to a person in the1800's. This also shows that Poe's settings affect the character that resides in that setting. Desai 2 As well as being enjoyable Edgar Allen Poe's stories hang together, by that it is meant that his stories are unified, there is no scene or aspect that is without purpose. This is intentional on Poe's part; Poe's philosophy is that "There should be no word written of which the tendency, direct or indirect, is not to the one pre-established design."
