Introduction

Walking into the Quad of Illinois College we came across two squirrels. Standing and looking at these creatures we asked what will the do next or how will they interact? According to Peg Halloran, “Autumn rates of food consumption exceed energetic needs by 32%”, which means that by watching these squirrels we would most likely see them foraging or eating since it was autumn. But to our surprise the squirrels ran around a little and climbed up the tree. Thinking about what Peg Halloran had said, we came to a hypothesis that Squirrels do not show differences in behaviors throughout the day. This goes against others beliefs but squirrels are active year round unlike some other creatures that hibernate for the winter.

Later on that day I saw a squirrel again and it did the same thing. This brought about another hypothesis, that throughout the day the squirrels do the same routine in the morning, afternoon, and evening. These two hypotheses were then put to the test.

Methods

To observe the squirrels we recorded every activity for every 15 seconds for 15 minutes in the observed time. There were three time periods in which the observations were made; Morning, Afternoon, and Evening. All of this information was recorded on the Animal Activity Record Sheet. (Fig 3.) Then by using that data we then were able to figure out the amount of energy used in each activity and total energy. (Fig 4.) We then used the Chi square test to evaluate the data.

Results

Our study showed variation in activities as seen by Fig 1. It also shows that throughout the day there is a fluctuation of activities. At midday the squirrels are found to be more likely resting, where as in the evening they are more likely to be running around. Looking at the Chi charts we can see the difference in what actually was observed with the squirrels and what we expected. By seeing the larger numbers in the last columns of Fig 2. We see that the observed is way off the expected range.

Discussion

Our results did not support the hypothesis that Squirrels do not show differences in behaviors throughout the day. It showed that in most cases there are some activities not done at all. We observed that the most common activities were resting, jumping, running, and climbing. The least common were carrying nuts, and calling.

Our results did not support the hypothesis that throughout the day...
