Queen Victoria was one of the greatest women ever to sit on
the throne of England. Her long reign lasted from 1837 to 1901.
Her efforts during these years changed England very much. Ironically,
Queen Victoria was never meant to reign England. Her
seat on the throne came about in an unusual way. After the death of Queen
Victoria's uncle, King George IV, the throne was meant to be passed on to one of
George III's grandchildren. However, no one in the royal family had given birth to any
legitimate children except for the Duke of Kent, Victoria's father. So at the
age of 18, Victoria, daughter of Duke Edward of Kent, became Queen
Victoria of England. This was due to a distant relation to the
former King.
Queen Victoria was born because her parents wanted to bear the
next heir to the throne. She was brought into the world for
political reasons. The story of the royal
family members' attempts to gain the crown begin early in the 1800's.
In November 1817 the only daughter of the Prince of Regent, Charlotte, the wife
of Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, died in childbirth. None of the
surviving among George III fifteen children had a legitimate child qualified to
reign. Some were unable for one reason or another to have children.
After the news of Princess Charlotte's death, Edward, the Duke of Kent,
studied the table of succession to see who
would be the next in line to become heir to the throne. Edward a
man who'd spent alot of his life doing military duty in Canada and
Gibraltar, felt that a new duty faced him. He felt he should marry and
produce an heir to the throne.
After alot of looking Edward finally decided to marry Victoire Marie
Louise of Saxe-Coburg, the Princess of Leiningen. A good competition
seemed to be going on between the
family to see whom would be able to marry and have children first.
King George was becoming mentally ill so there soon had to be someone qualified to take
his place.
Not long after Victoire and Edward settled down in their new home,
KensingtonPalace, to await the birth of their child, Victoria arrived. May 24,
1819, a day which is now one of Great Britain's annual holidays, the future
queen was born. Victoria was a good healthy baby, but it wasn't
