In, The House On Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, the author has efficiently placed
superior symbols throughout the novel, and if a reader thoroughly combs through each
page, symbols become apparently noticeable. Primarily, Mama’s hair represents beauty
and comfort. In addition, women represent captivity and wasted dreams. Lastly, Cathy,
the queen of cats exemplifies hopeful imagination and the upper class. All three of these
themes are used in the book to point to the novel’s main idea, growing up in the poverty
stricken area of Latino Chicago.
Mama’s hair is used to describe Esperanza’s feeling of contentment and beauty
towards her mother. Early in the book, specifically the chapter named “Hair”, Mama’s
hair is described as,” ...sweet to put your nose into when she is holding you, holding you
and you feel safe.” Giving you the impression that her mother’s hair is comforting to be

comforting place to be. While knowing this, Cisneros is subconsciously telling us she
loves her mother and feels safe while she is near her, while never directly saying,” I love
my mom and feel incredibly safe when I’m near her.” Esperanza also finds her mother’s
hair beautiful,”...my mother’s hair, my mother’s hair, like little rosettes, like little candy
circles all curly and pretty...” She has portrayed her mother as a beautiful lady.
Esperanza has a habit of making judgments on everybody in the book, showing the reader
what is wrong with them. But not her mother. To Esperanza, her mother is almost holy,
the most natural, breathtaking lady on the block. She stands for the one little flower
growing amongst an acre of weeds, the only diamond in a barrel full of pebbles.
Women have played a big part in the symbolic meaning of captivity and wasted
dreams. Women in this neighborhood are treated very poorly. Locked up in their house
with no other options but cleaning, cooking, and taking abuse from husbands, may it be
verbal, pyscological, or physical.” Esperanza, I have inherited her name, but I don’t want
to inherit her place by the window .” Esperanza is speaking of her grandmother, who
was taken away by her husband, and ended up locked in her house, caged like an animal.
Many women, the reader is introduced to, end up this...
