Persuasive Essay: Abortion A young woman at the age of twenty four is six months along in her pregnancy. By her eighth month, she has come across complications. Within one week, they continue to get progressively worse. She is eventually rushed to the hospital, and she is told that her complications are so severe that they might cost her her life. She is now faced with a dilemma. Saving her life with the use of abortion or saving her child’s life. What is the right thing to do? Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal of the fetus or embryo from the uterus. The medical method used for abortion is a drug named Mifepristone and Methotrexate which are tablets that are swallowed and causes detachment of the trophoblast (outer layer of developing embryo which ultimately forms the placenta) from the uterine wall, which is easier to accomplish the less developed pregnancy. The surgical method used for abortion is called Vacuum Aspiration. A handheld syringe or electric pump is inserted into the uterus, and is vacuumed out. Approximately 42 million abortions are performed each year. “93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient)” (Guttmacher). Abortion is a precarious procedure and should not be performed because of the physical and emotional health risks as well as understanding that there are other options such as giving the baby up for adoption. Abortion is a very dangerous and difficult procedure to execute ;therefore it may lead to many physical health risks. Many women have experienced discomfort and pain during induced abortion. “Women who have induced abortions have an increased risk of HIV infection of 49%” (Westside Pregnancy). This means that this disease (HIV) will be spreading even more due to the abortions that happen each year. There is strong evidence that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. “A study of more than 1800 women appearing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that overall, women having abortions increased their risk of getting breast cancer before age 45 by 50%” (Westside Pregnancy). According to this statistic not only are babies dying from abortion, women are increasing their chances of dying from breast cancer due to abortion. After getting the procedure done, many complications start to surface up. “Complications such as these are common: bleeding, hemorrhage, laceration of the cervix, menstrual disturbance, inflammation of the reproductive organs, and infections in the uterus” (Westside Pregnancy). People see all of these facts and statistics and immediately change their perspective on abortion. This is a very dangerous procedure, and it could put the lives of the woman and fetus in jeopardy. Just how there are many physical health risks, there are also emotional and psychological health risks that go along with abortion. Many women find themselves coping with feelings they don’t expect after the abortion. “Approximately 30% to 50% of women report feelings of regret, anxiety, guilt, mild depression, and other negative emotions.” (Guttmacher). As one can see, these negative emotions can take over a women’s life. Women may experience abortion as a traumatic event which leads into having Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “PTSD is a psychological dysfunction which results from a traumatic experience which overwhelms a person’s normal defense mechanisms resulting in intense fear, feelings of helplessness or being trapped or loss of control.” (Elliot). This psychological dysfunction is a very serious disorder. After the abortion, many women complain. “In a study of post-abortion patients only 8 weeks after their abortion, researchers found that 44% complained of nervous disorders, 36% had experienced sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor.” (Elliot). All of these complaints are not healthy for the women. To conclude, abortion is most likely to cause many emotional and psychological health risks. One of the reasons why women decide to have an abortion is because they don’t have the financial needs to support a baby ;however there are always other safer options such as adoption. There are many people who are anxious to have a baby and they can’t, therefore are willing to take care of the child. “The Harris Survey of over 1400 Americans found that the highest percentages of Americans who had considered adopting a child were those of ages 35-54 married and female.” (Westside Pregnancy). This statistic demonstrates how many people are interested in desiring to adopt a child. Most couples and families who are seeking to adopt a child are financially stable and have a higher level of education. “At American Adoptions, over 95% of adoptive families have a high school education and over 90% have a bachelor’s degree. Nationally adoptive parents have at least a high school education in 79% of private domestic adoptions.” (Westside Pregnancy). If parents have good education, then the child also will. It is ultimately important before deciding to go through with the abortion, to look at all the other options. Abortion is a perilous procedure that must be thoroughly thought due to the physical and emotional consequences. Also, it is imperative to understand that there are other options out there such as adoption. Women who undergo this procedure tend to experience physical health risks such as menstrual disturbances and infection in the uterus. Physical problems and emotional problems are a reality as well. Regret and guilt are the two main feelings that these women experience after abortion. Adoption has always been an option to anyone who has come across with and unexpected pregnancy. In conclusion, abortion is a senseless act that women should avoid at all cost. These innocent defenseless babies should have the right to live! Life is the greatest gift that a woman can give.
