Compare and Contrast Macbeth, King of Scotland,
with Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
“Out damned spot”!
So said the (fictional) Lady Macbeth as she imagined that the blood of the slain King, Duncan, was staining her hands. In actual fact Duncan was killed in battle, and he was a young man, not the elderly monarch that William Shakespeare portrays in his tragic play “Macbeth”.
King Macbeth was born sometime around 1005 in the province of Moray. He was a member of the junior royal line of Loarn. He became one of three kings dominating 11th Century Scotland. He was not a prince. The ascension of kings in those days, in the country of Alba, the forerunner to Scotland, was not based purely on birth but on ability. That way the people were sure that they would always have a strong king. Macbeth’s father was Findlay, the Mormaer (or ruler) of Moray. Findlay was killed by a man called Gillacomgain, who was actually a kinsman of his in 1020. Macbeth did not become the Mormaer himself on his father’s death, that position was taken by Gillacomgain himself.
Macbeth went to the Court of King Malcolm 11 of Alba where he met king Cnut of Denmark and England. Dates are not specific regarding this visit, historians suggest either 1027 or 1031. In 1032 however, it is known that Macbeth became Mormaer of Moray, like his father. He achieved this by killing Gillacomgain. The following year Macbeth married Gruoch, who was actually the widow of Gillacomgain, and became stepfather to her son Lulach.
In Alba at this time, politics and religion went hand in hand. The country’s economy was based on agriculture. Macbeth fought a battle in 1040 which he killed his cousin King Duncan 1st, not an elderly or frail man, but a young energetic one. Macbeth’s army was victorious, Duncan died, and Macbeth drove out Duncan’s elder sons, Malcolm and Donald Bane. Macbeth became King of Alba, King of the Scots.
