My name is Herman Webster Mudgett and this is my story. I grew up in New Hampshire in a strict lifestyle. I was bullied by my father and fellow schoolmates. The other students often forced me to the local doctor’s office and made me touch human skeletons. It was easy for them to get in because one of the dads owned the dentist office so the boy stole the keys for the day’s “activities.” It was meant to terrify me, but it had the opposite affect, I was fascinated by them.
After I graduated high school I married Clara Lovering who had a very wealthy family and used her father’s money to pay for my tuition for medical school at Ann Arbor, Michigan. I met a college there and convinced him to help me steal corpses out of the school and used their identities for life insurance policies, naming myself as their beneficiary. I would then set the corpses up to look like they had died in an accident and collected the money. After a few months and a lot richer I Ann Arbor and made my way to Chicago, leaving my wife and child behind. When I came to Chicago I changed my name to H. H. Holmes and started work at a local pharmacist. I soon got to know the locals and gained their trust and took more responsibility in the progress of the store. A year later I got rid of Mrs. Dr. Holden, the owner of the store, and told the people she had gone to California to visit her family and loved it so much that she decided to stay there.
