At the fresh food market, I asked around in the open air market and I found out that some fruits that are in season and grown in Italy are apples, plums, and melons. I also found out that the zucchini, which I’ve never tried before, was organic and grown in Italy, and I took some home and made zucchini flowers with my roommate. I tried a yellow plum, Susina, which was new to me and grown in Italy. There were a lot of options for healthier (not white flour) carbohydrates like all of the fresh egg pasta, some sourdough breads, and a variety of rye and other grain breads, but I wasn’t looking too much at those because they looked like they had nuts. The best sourdough breads were the ones that were higher and softer because it means they had better fermentation and were therefore healthier because they had a better source of protein and were better for digestion. When I looked for lean whole proteins, the best options for me were eggs, chicken, and fish. The chicken was fairly priced and some cost-effective wild-fish were tuna, anchovies, and sardines. The salmon was on the pricy side, unfortunately. I learned that tripe is cow stomach, and I am probably going to avoid that because it looked disgusting to me. I also learned which parts of the market were more touristy and pricy like the stands with the colourful fancy pasta and the displays of cheese.
