I can honestly say that I had no idea that the National Wildlife Federation came into being because of the cartoonist. Ding Darling used his cartoons to promote conservation ethics as far back as 1930 and was instrumental in creating the government agency that used the practice of scientific management for fish and wildlife. As an interesting note, Mr. Darling also led the development of the federal duck stamp that is still the primary source of revenue for waterfowl management and has to be purchased by all waterfowl hunters to this day. Darling pointed out that while several people cared about wildlife conservation there was no organized fashion to advocate or influence policy decisions, his work and input valued the importance of multiple stakeholder participation, accepting attitudes, values and beliefs of many groups.

And his dream came true in 1936 when he "convinced President Franklin Roosevelt to invite over 2000 hunters, anglers, and conservationists from across the country to the first North American Wildlife conference in Washington DC." And this is where the General Wildlife Federation, later changed to National Wildlife Federation, was formed with the idea of uniting all outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts behind a common goal of conservation and Dana Darling became the first president of the organization.

Darling’s quest to unite all voices concerning conservationist was the basis for many laws and policies that are present today at the national level. The National Wildlife Federation return every year to Washington, DC to provide governance, vision and grassroots needed to achieve joint conservation goals.
