There are many advantages and disadvantages that come to mind when it comes to Wal-Mart working with unions. First of all, what has to be taken into consideration is what an actual labor union does. Just to summarize it all in a nutshell, labor unions are organizations of workers, acting collectively seeking to promote and protect their mutual interest through collective bargaining (DeCenzo, 2010). So basically, things like compensation, working conditions, rights, and benefits are negotiated to meet the needs and requirements of both employees and employers. With that said, clearly for an organization like Wal-Mart who has employees that amount up to well over one and a half million, a huge disadvantage would fall on not being able to provide the negotiated means for employees that the labor union calls for. For Wal-Mart, something like raising over a million employees pay to compensate a certain negotiated percentage seems implausible. This will generally stand as a disadvantage because Wal-Mart could end up not even having the capitol to meet certain labor union demands which can plummet them financially. On the other hand though, a labor union can easily help to increase Wal-Marts employee loyalty. Once employees find that their organization is willing to negotiate on means that can benefit them, they are more likely to stick around and reap the benefits. The downside to this though is once again as stated before that Wal-Mart may not be able to meet the demands of the millions of employees that they have all over the world.

Employees can come across a great deal of advantages and disadvantages in the event that they take on union membership. For starters, as an employee, union membership allows the benefit of collective bargaining. This collective bargaining allows for the advantage of a work force to exhibit greater pressure on business management to achieve their goals. Basically, with strength in numbers, it will be much easier for an employee to get what they want as opposed to trying to get it by themselves. Another advantage of union membership is that unions are able to provide financial assistance or income assistance for members who have been laid off. Union membership also gives off the advantage that secondary benefits like health care, insurance, subsidized mortgages, and other considerations that provide benefits are garnered by unions. Also, when different unions band together, they can exert lateral pressure on employers through strikes and walk-outs that aide them in forcing management to concede to union demands. Last, a good benefit is that union shops allow for its members to gain preferred positions or seniority for certain positions. Conversely, in union shops an employee might have to give up his position to a senior union member which can also serve as a disadvantage. Another disadvantage would be that union members have to sacrifice for portions of their paychecks for union dies. Last, a disadvantage would be that unions often dictate whether members are able to work or not through strikes and walk-outs. This in turn may affect a union members actual paycheck.
