In the United States, the ongoing workforce of Americans suffers profound changes from the economy as it merges with the Global economy. What we will continue to experience are the rich get richer, and the poor continuing to stay poor unless the poor take advantage of opportunities and make sound career decisions. Enlightened from choice, exceptional career opportunities for the less fortunate are achievable, simply by staying informed of all possibilities in the job market.
There are many points that a person might consider if he or she is entering the job market. New technologies, worldwide communications and transportation are the new playing field of employment and careers yet many companies base their production overseas with the corporate headquarters here in America. In addition, there are international companies that bring businesses here and hire illegal has to do the job for lesser wages. Americans find themselves having to settle for lower wages in order to compete with outside influences. In retrospect, corporate and industrial America should not be based on success; rather it should be based on function within the global economy.
During the post war era, incomes rose together and everyone moved up the totem pole together. Poverty did not mean a person was homeless and undesirable in the community. Poverty was the condition of America, as was the challenge of finding jobs for everyone. The pay scale for individuals indicated their social status and once employed, this problem is thought to be over; however, with the rise of population, full employment did not match up with the economy. The ever-changing technologies and transportation through out the world and the United States have changed the ways and means of old.
In today’s world, three functional categories emerge in the American workforce. These are finance and international technology/symbolic analysis, “white collar” production employment, ranging from the manipulation of data to health care and finally, “blue collar” employment, which is essentially basic personal services. Combined information and data stated by Robert B. Reich, “U.S. Income Inequality Keeps on Rising” and “Tomorrow’s Jobs”, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, have covered these topics and more to give America a comprehensive view today’s jobs and the prospects for the future.
Symbolic analysis, routine production and personal services account for three out of four jobs in America. The other one fourth of American jobs is Government employees, such as public teachers and defense system engineers, who are regulated employees. These government utility workers and engineers are sheltered from the global competitive market. Symbolic analysis represents 21.2% and 6 million new professional jobs (114). White males do these jobs usually; Ivy League educated while holding a commanding position in the global market. These individuals work in small teams or with partners. They rarely interact directly with a boss and are usually networking, making deals, and traveling abroad. Based on their value to the corporation, incomes and salaries of these individuals continue to grow, while the need for telecommunication plays a role for their enterprises. No other country in the world prepares these individuals like the United States. New York and Chicago with finance, Los Angles for music and film, San Francisco and Boston teach science and engineering (105). The manipulation of words and data, both oral and visual, is done by analyzing, designing and strategy. Jobs from this category include lawyers, commercial investment bankers, academics (Ivy League professionals), public relation executives, accountants, lobbyist, doctors, finance and securities, business management consultants and analyst, insurance and commodities, information and software publishers, broadcasting, newspaper and book publishing, writers, editors, scientists, design engineers, advertising and marketing specialist, real estate marketing and developing, music and film actors, producers etc.(104).
At the top of the list for now and in the future is employment recruitment and placement specialist. These services will grow at a rate of 45.5% through 2004-14, and supply almost two-thirds of all new jobs in the Nation (111). Because of the population growth predicted by the year 2014, housing and real estate will create 353,000 new jobs and will grow at a rate 32.1%, thus reflecting the housing boom though out the nation (112,113). Childcare and pre school administrators will account for 27.9% and 25.9% respectively (115). Computer and information is at 27% overall, and general operations managers will create 308,000 jobs by 2014 (115). Business, government, and financial organizations in the analytic services component will provide 4.5 million jobs and will grow at a rate of 15.8% (110).
Second in command is production service employment. This category currently empowers 5.3 million American jobs overall. Their work is repetitive, monotonous and the long-term goal for this position is a produced result.
