Natsume Soseki wrote Kokoro in 1914, but it was set in 1912 when Japan was transitioning from the Meiji era to the modern era. The novel focuses on a love triangle between Sensei, his friend K, and the woman they both love. In the beginning it starts out with the narrator befriending a man who he calls simply Sensei. Sensei has a secret backstory explaining why he keeps going to a grave every month. The novel also tells of the alienation since their migration to the city of the narrator, Sensei, and K. Also, the changing of the values to a new era was too much for the narrator’s father. Sensei’s actions of him proposing to the woman both him and K love, leads to K committing suicide. Later in life, Sensei is prompted to commit suicide following a general’s death, but the true meaning behind him wanting to do it was because of the guilt he felt for causing his friend’s suicide so in turn he commits suicide.

Sensei asks K to come live with him and his landlord and his landlord’s daughter. Friendship at that time was more important than love. However, Sensei is afraid K will ask for Ojosan’s hand in marriage before he can. This action just shows how much Japan was changing from being all about morality and humanity to a world where individualism was the main worry. Perhaps if Sensei had just been born in modern times he would not have felt as bad about K’s death and committed suicide.
