In April of 2004 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) aired a series letting Canadian viewers vote on who the greatest Canadian of all time is; Wayne Gretzky was voted into the top ten list, taking tenth position. But how could a hockey player be so great? Is it because everyone knows Canadians love hockey? Wayne Gretzky has led an inspiring life throughout the early years, the story behind his legendary number, his Nation Hockey League (NHL) life, and with all of his accomplishments.

In January 26th, 1961 the greatest man in hockey was born. His name is Wayne Douglas Gretzky, he was born in Brantford, Ontario. As a kid hockey was the biggest component in his life growing up. His father, Walter Gretzky inspired and taught him how to skate which made him the hockey hero he is today. All of his life Gretzky was always better on the ice then all of the other children his age. When he was ten years old he was featured in the Toronto Telegram for scoring three-hundred and seventy eight goals in eighty five games. By the time he was fourteen Gretzky was so talented he was playing with the big boys, twenty year-olds, when he decided to leave his home town to shoot for the stars. All together Wayne Gretzky played only one year in the Ontario Hockey League. At the age of sixteen Gretzky played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
