Breaking the Cycle
Most people do not know the name Jared Fogle, but even if you haven’t most people have heard of his unlikely journey to fame, he is best known as ‘the subway guy’. The 6’2” guy who credits fast food to help him lose more than 115 kgs and break his own cycle of obesity.
Growing up in Indiana, Jared was the only one in his family with a weight problem, As a child who watched too much TV and was in love with junk food, Jared was overweight by the time he reached third grade. At the age of 20 he was weighing around 425 pounds or just under 193 kgs. The size of his famous old pants was 62 inches or 1 metre 6 wide, they could wrap around me twice!! And how did you get this way you might ask?? Well at this point Jared was eating enough for 5 people a day, sometime over 10, 000 calories. Everyday for breakfast he would have at least two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, a large order of hash browns and a large coffee with cream and 10 packets of sugar.
For lunch, an entire pizza, with extra meat, extra cheese and of course desert. Believe it or not he would also need a mid afternoon snack, usually two large bean burritos with extra cheese.
And dinner? That usually of not one or two but three trips to the Chinese buffet, and ice cream for dessert and he topped all that of with a late night snack of not a warm glass of milk but usually a hamburger, French fries and some kind of dessert. Jared was not controlling his weight; his weight was controlling him.
In an interview he stated ‘whereas most college students pick their classes on the teacher, or the class itself, or the time of day, for me it was, did they have adequate seating that could fit me in that particular classroom?’ It got so bad that just walking across campus became a daily struggle for Jared.
