Communism, as defined by the Miriam-Webster dictionary, is “a theory advocating elimination of private property” and “a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed.” According to Karl Marx, Communism can be summed up in one sentence: The “Abolition of private property” (p79). Theoretically, this idea can work, but it would also mean that no one would be in control of their own lives. Can a communist society properly exist in the world today?

Communism has existed in societies for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The original communism is thought to have stemmed from the tribal like colonies where everyone shared everything, based solely on necessity. In the 1800s, Karl Marx defined communism more so as we do today. He thought that society moves in stages. It starts with the primitive society, with no classes, goes into feudalism, with many classes, highest being king, to the developing of the bourgeoisie class (p72), and in turn, the bourgeoisie revolt, over to capitalism, the development of proletarian class, and its revolt, over to socialism, which is dominated by industrial working class. Then, the gradual progress to communism should come naturally. This leaves communism to be Karl Marx’s ideal society:

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.

3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.

4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.

5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.

6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.

7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.

8. Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.

9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.

10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. (p83)

If all of these things came together, Marx’ ideal society could exist.
