The Present

Life is like a journey taken in the black of night. There a startling moments of clarity but the majority of it is dark, black and indistinguishable. In a Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and more specifically The Present, Annie Dillard shows how the brief flashes of insight flees from us as water slips through the fingers in a cupped palm. The present is “an invisible electron”, which fees from us all to soon, as she shows in her experiences from her time at Tinker Creek and her choice of words in her retelling of her time spent there.

“Catch it if you can”. What? By the time the question is uttered it is gone. An eternity has past. How can it be possible to catch the present? Life is forever hurrying on to the next project, assignment, task and item on the list, how could it be possible to catch the present with eyes slung so far ahead? Life is forever looking back at times gone by, reminiscing, stating “if only...”, how can the present be caught when the eyes are slung so far back? How can the present be caught except by dropping the future and the past? As she shows in the section so aptly entitled The Present, “this is it, right now, the present, this empty gas station, here this western wind, this tang of coffee on the tongue.” She has come to this moment of astounding clarity and absoloutness by dropping all thoughts of the past; by dropping all worries of the future. She is living in the present. Yet she acknoledges the fact that the moment the thought of living in the present comes into her mind, the moment has past. In this passage, she relates her attempts to hold on to this glorious feeling; she attempts to show others how it can be done. Only by uncluttering her mind of the past and future was she able to live the present. Only in welcoming the rich information, the particular hue of a fabric, the feel of the gravel beneath the feet, the noise of distant traffic intermingled with a babbling of a stream, which seeks entrance into our consciousness is it, possible to live in the present.
