Brave New World Research Paper

Aldous Huxley is considered to be one of the greatest Literary Minds in the Modern Era. The book Brave New World, is considered to be one of his greatest creations. Huxley believed it was easiest to touch your reader in fiction. In Brave New World he did. His book was a tool for him to give his fears and reservations a voice to speak to the public. Huxley s great mind and many fields of research allowed him to write this uniquely insightful piece, Brave New World is a look into the human psyche and society. It speaks out against what he feels is evil in society and what is wrong with the human cultural and industrial revolution. He used irony as his main weapon to illustrate the degradation of human society. His family was one of the prominent intellectual families in England, and his Uncle was Darwin s Bulldog. His great mind and Unique insight into the human world and social surroundings and the attitude of the times led him to write this masterpiece that exemplifies his genius and speaks to the world.

Brave New World , begins in the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Center. A place where humans are grown and trained in the simplest sense, In this building human life begins on a conveyor built on an assembly line. Here they create social castes by creating biologically better and more advanced humans and, The Alphas and Betas. The also grow physically stunted runts Deltas and Epsilons, all castes conditioned to fit their predestined life style. The Alphas and Betas do higher

level work. Alphas being technological innovators and social innovators doing work that actually requires a wider field of knowledge and a working thought process. Still

most Alphas although physically and mentally superior still are just as brain-washed as the rest. One might thing that an educated Alpha would see the evils of their society, but they do not. They have Solidarity Service meetings, a pseudo-religious meetings that consist of soma-trips and a wild chanting to fill the holes in the spirit only they can feel. Still some break their conditioning and think, of course then they are promptly exiled. Betas although still intelligent are just taught what they need to know and their limited minds are happy. From there down the work with Deltas and Epsilons in unskilled and menial. Their minds primitive and bodies weaker and less attractive. There is no long birth in this Brave New World there is decanting. Viviparous relationships are out the door and new superficial relationships are in. The thought is shallowness and lack of intensity of emotion in one key to happiness. Contentment through consumption, God is a long forgotten myth and all are happy with their soma holidays. This worlds happiness is based in and on a shallow existence. From the very beginning according to class they are conditioned through sleep teaching, While sleeping they will continually repeat phrases such as, Alpha Children wear grey, They work much harder than we do because they are so frightfully clever. I am really awfully glad I am a Beta. (Huxley 27) There is also behavioral conditioning such as electric shocks to teach a certain class to like or dislike things. Delta children are shocked when they touch books. All children are taught to love country games but hate the country. This leads to consumption of

travel. Children are taught right from the beginning to respect their betters and be happy being of a lower caste. In sync with superficial relationships people believe everyone belongs to everyone and sex with hundreds of partners is not ridiculed at all

but praised among both genders, from a young age erotic play is highly endorsed. Relationships are known to cause intense emotions that can lead to sadness. They also know that love between couples will create a bond that is imperfect and also leads to unhappiness because of this people are conditioned not to grow close to other humans. People who alone together can cause social instability and people who are sad could possibly cause revolution. Contentment through ignorance is key.

The main characters were John, The Savage Lenina Crowne, and Bernard Marx. The characters and plot in this book were not so much the focus of this book and but less as important as the message but they still played an integral role. The plot was purposely simple and did not deviate. Huxley did not want to make the book so convoluted that the reader was distracted from the message. The actual

story really begins with The Savage a man born and not decanted in a reservation in America, his mother was from the Brave New World. This reservation is one of the last places where human society is normal however backward and unhappy. Here Lenina and Bernard come on vacation and meet this savage. Bernard sees a possibility for his own personal gain here by bringing John back to England. At first The Savage is excited to leave this reservation where he said, Alone Alone, So am I, Terribly Alone, (Huxley 139). Unfortunately for John could not handle this new and superficial world, the change in extremes is too much. He came to the realization that

this world was fake and held no real happiness and fulfillment. After his crisis with Lenina and his mothers death his ability to control himself was lost. In the end Bernard Marx s unorthodox behavior was punished with exile in Iceland and John

drove himself insane with guilt and after taking soma and participating in a an orgy he hung himself
