The Hangman and The Pardoners Tale are in some ways similar and in some exceptionally different. They are similar in the human trait of selfishness and self-centeredness. In both stories the person or persons are defending their lives for that of another s. Yet the general stories of the two are entirely different.

The Pardoner's tale is emphasizing a moral point to the audience. The Pardoner's point is quite obvious, his tale shows the disastrous effects of greed. In The Hangman the main character is hiding in the crowd as others step up to defend maybe themselves or maybe another. Meanwhile the one the hangman is sent for hides in the shadows of his coward ness. People ask the hangman Hangman, who is he for whom you raise the gallows tree , while the one he searches for listens and then watches them hang. Another steps up to the hangman and is in turn hung until no one is left except the meek man whom the hangman searches. The man allowed his entire congregation of neighbors to die for him for The scaffold was raised for none but you . The Hangman goes on to say And where are the others that might have stood side by your side for the common good .
