endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. Was this statement a true or a false statement? Many people in the South believe this statement at the time, 1780-1880, to be true. Now, when people look back at this statement and what it represented, they see that this statement only held true for white male citizens of the United States. The claim was never intended for women or slaves in the United States. When looking at this statement and the articles that were written, every right was given to the white male and was never intended for equality for anyone; white male, woman, or slave. This statement claims, all men are created equal, yet discriminates against women and slaves. Therefore, all men were not created equal under law, they were not given their natural born rights, and they were punished for attempting to be on the same level as the white male citizens.
Today all, people in the United States have an equal opportunity to become what they want to become. It is hard to imagine a time in American history when this great freedom was not offered to everyone yet, at the time when these words were written, women were subordinate and slaves were brought here against their own will. Once the slaves were brought here they were put up on auctions blocks and sold to the highest bidder. They were then brought to their master s plantation where they had to work on the farm from daybreak to nightfall, hardly ever getting a break. The slaves were never given enough food to make it through the week, The pork was often tainted and the fish was of poorest quality-herrings. Their clothes lasted them possibly one season, ...consisted of two tow-linen shirts-such linen as the coarsest crash towels are made of; one pair of trowsers of the same material, for summer, and a pair of trowsers and a jacket made of woolen, for the winter; one pair of yarn stockings, and one pair of shoes. The South s attitude towards women was, Here now, the very being of a woman, like that of a slave, is absorbed in her master. All contracts made with her, like those made with slaves by their owners, are a mere nullity. Then women, when married, were entering an agreement saying that the husbands are there to be protectors and to be providers. The women were merely there to cook, clean, and raise the children. The women were far from being equal to their husbands. Even though the Declaration of Independence may have stated, all men are created equal, these words were only intended for an exalted group of white males, and helped to further suppress women and slaves.
Moreover, certain rights that are given to individual when he or she is born are considered to be natural. Many of the, self-evident truths were denied to the slaves upon their arrival to America. Even when the slaves were freed from slavery, they never fully gained their rights. Many still were looked down upon and never considered to be equal. Discrimination and segregation hit America with great force. There were many jobs that would not hire a black person, but when a business did the white men did not want to work side-by-side with a black man. Fredrick Douglass described the discrimination he endured at his place of work when he said, I was beset by four of them at once One came in front, armed with a brick; there was one at each side, and one behind, and they closed up around me. No one even tried to help Fredrick Douglass as he was beaten nearly to death in broad daylight. As he laid on the ground he could hear shouts of, kill him-kill him-kill the d d nigger! knock his brains out-he struck a white person. This kind of behavior did not cease over the years. The Civil War was fought between the North and the South in order to end slavery. Even though this ended slavery, it also created much segregation and discrimination. As the years went by, the white population...
