The media has exploited violent and unlawful acts entirely too much. Whether on television or the front page of the newspaper, stories of crimes and violence are broadcast in an almost glorified manner to our society, and more importantly our children. But where are the positive headlines that advertise the good actions taken by our world? Most of the time you will only find them in small print at the bottom of the page or at the end of a news broadcast. The media needs to focus more on the positive things that people do and less on who robbed a bank, killed forty people and then committed suicide. The bottom line is we need more of the right positive reinforcement in our media today.
What is the right positive reinforcement ? Well first lets define positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement can be defined as rewarding a subject s action with something that the subject views positively. For example, if Joe loves to eat candy, then Joe will do whatever will get him the candy. If Joe gets all A s on his report card and thus is given candy in response to getting A s, then Joe s action of getting A s has been positively reinforced by giving him what he wanted, the candy. This is an example of the right positive reinforcement . The wrong positive reinforcement can be shown using the same subject, Joe . Joe, who still loves candy, goes out and kills someone. In response to this behavior Joe receives the candy anyway. In this example, the wrong behavior is being reinforced with something the subject wants. Thus positive reinforcement works the opposite way. Psychological studies show that we are most influenced when we are young kids (2-7). During this time is when the world around us can greatly influence the way we will be when we grow up. Whatever is or is not positively reinforced , whether a good or bad behavior while we are young, will more than likely stick with us for most of our life. Basically, whatever gets us the candy when we are young will more than likely become the method of getting it when we are older.
So what is our society s candy ? In a poll given to fifty people, more than half said that becoming rich and famous or being in the spotlight is something they wish would happen to them. While becoming rich takes either a lot of hard work or a lot of luck, obtaining stardom is not always as hard. Making the news or the front page of the paper is only as hard as the media makes it. The problem that we have run into is the extreme acts people take to make the news or the front page. How many times do you see the news break in and tell of someone volunteering too much time to help homeless people? The answer is never! You only see them break in to tell us that someone walked into a school and shot up a bunch of people. It seems as though everytime you turn on the television or open up a paper there is a story about someone committing murder or some other horrible act. This only advertises to the people seeking fame out there that the way to get it is to break the law.
