It wasn t exactly the second runner up for the Best Picture Oscar, but Starship Troopers was a trifle more creative and meaningful than the gory and trashy appearance it first showcases. It is about a group of friends who are all drafted to go to war against the evil Bug army. Though it takes place in the late second millennium, Starship Troopers gives many examples of their future society acting like our society did in the second world war. Exemplified by the scenes showing expansionist bugs, propaganda, drafted teens and many others, Starship Troopers metaphorically suggests the teen s point of view of World War II.
Bugs of immense size, strength, and intelligence where being hurled toward earth on meteors and inhabit any planet they land on. Earth mobilizes it s army to attack the Bugs. Since the Bugs have exoskeletons, they are very difficult to kill. When a Bug get s you, you die a horrible gory death. To make enrolling in this unattractive war seem attractive, the Federal Network was formed. This is a television station that is devoted to glorifying the fight against Bugs, and joining the Mobil Infantry. Johnny Rico, a boy just graduating high school, was admitted to Harvard but also wanted to join the Mobil Infantry. Disobeying his father, he goes off to war. His girlfriend Carmen, and his best friend are drafted as well. Before they leave, the three young kids make a pact to always be friends. As time goes on they grow apart, Carmen breaks up with Rico, and his best friend becomes a strategic mastermind of very high rank. His whereabouts are classified so communication is impossible. An old friend from high school Diz, a beautiful yet tough G.I. Jane like girl, ends up in Rico s platoon. Diz loved him and always tried to get him, but Rico loved his girlfriend and turned her offers down. The leader of Rico and Dozes platoon is their old history teacher who to their their surprise is also a war hero and legend. They swarm desert planets and fight the giant bugs with their primitive machine guns, suffering through gory deaths like torn off limbs, getting torn in half, beheaded, and suction of the brain while still alive. Rico learns from his old teacher never to pass up a good thing, so he takes Diz and makes love to her in a tent. Soon after, she gets stabbed through her stomach just before she boards the escape ship. Soon after Diz dies in Rico s trembling arms, under his misty eyes, on the ship which carries only half the platoon that arrived the day before. The movie ends with Rico with his best friend and Carmen standing together after the Brain Bug is captured. They muse of the days to come when they can learn from the Brain Bug how to kill the regular Bugs. Soon they will take out the Bugs for good. They were of different rank and different jobs but the friendship they vowed was still there as they were reunited again.
Starship Troopers is extremely unrealistic. Why do they need a ground force? Can t they just bomb the planets instead? If it s so far in the future and they have spaceships, why do they fight the Bugs with machine guns? Don t they have photon torpedoes and laser blasters? But the point seems...
