The Escape from Nothingness
Nothingness is something that you can t quite put your finger on. It isn t anything physical; you can t see it. It s more like the feeling you get when something terrible happens that makes no sense and there doesn t seem to be any way to justify it. It s the feeling you get when you are tempted to almost believe that there is no meaning to anything you say or do and no meaning to the whole world; that nothing matters at all. But this feeling is so much more terrible than whatever happened to make you think that way in the first place that you, at once, banish the thought from your head and pretend it was never there. In A Clean Well-Lighted Place, Earnest Hemingway focuses on the need for light and order in the lives of two characters who suffer from loneliness brought on by their belief in nothing.
The dialog between the two waiters in the caf demonstrates their opposite attitudes towards the old drunk man. The young waiter makes light conversation out of the old mans suicide attempt. He mentions the attempt, but couldn t care less why the old man did it. Last week he [the old drunk] tried to commit suicide. (86) The young waiter is in such a hurry to get home to his wife that he doesn t have time to care. He s lonely. I m not lonely. I have a wife waiting in bed for me. (87) He is young, has a full life, and does not know how it feels to be faced with the certainty of a soon death. Therefor, He is unable to identify with the old drunk. He shows cold indifference when he says, You should have killed yourself last week. (86) In a way, the young waiter s attitude is a symbol of the separation of the old man from the rest of the world, which is too preoccupied with its own concerns to even attempt to understand his situation.
