The difference between news and entertainment is that news is events occurring that have an impact in the lives of the people involves, while entertainment is information people seek for pleasure. News can be politics, tragedy, natural disasters, crime and other current events. Entertainment is celebrity information , human interest pieces, and sensationalism. Tabloid news is entertainment disguised as news. The consequences of confusing tabloid news and entertainment with actual news, are that stories of significance are passed over in favor of fluff pieces that are more entertaining, and sensational stories actually become entertainment.
Some of the more recent sensational stories that have become entertainment through the journalism process have involved celebrities. The O. J. Simpson murder trial, the Michael Jackson molestation charges, and the Tanya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan fiasco are examples of valid news stories which became entertainment after news organizations gave the stories far more space and air time than they actually deserved. Led by tabloid television shows and tabloid newspapers, the mainstream press seems to be forsaking its ethical commitment to balanced news coverage and jumping on the entertainment bandwagon (Wilson 380).
News is a business and in order to sell news you have to report the news the consumers will buy. Tabloid news is as successful as it is because they sell the news consumers can t wait to buy. There is no secret to why the National Enquirer is the largest selling tabloid in the country; they are successful because they sell the sensational and the titillating, which entertains there audience and keeps them coming back for more. The success of tabloid journalism is #dangerous because it forces legitimate news organizations to compete by also featuring some of the more lurid news stories the tabloids report on (Wilson 381).
