Our view on what a family is has changed drastically throughout the last five decades. From the traditional Nuclear family of Mom, Dad, Son, and Daughter of the fifties, to today s model of a scattering of relatives all over the country and even the world, we have seen several versions of the idea of a family. Today s family usually consists of one parent and a child or two, with the other parent living somewhere else. Many families of previous generations have had most of the relatives within a fifty to one hundred mile radius. Whereas today, most relatives can be found states, even countries away. There are both advantages and disadvantages to each of these models. I believe that the best model however, is the model of a close knit family.
In the traditional family, relatives were very close with each other and provided a support system for each other and for the children. Many families spent every holiday and often times every weekend with each other. Although there were probably several differences between relatives, they overcame those differences for the good of the family. Parents put aside their problems that they were having in their marriage so that their children would grow up in a loving home. Mothers were home for their children to help them with their homework or just to spend time with them. Grandparents were also around to help out their children. For the most part, traditional families provided a warm, safe haven for children to grow up.
In today s view of the family, there are many varieties that it is hard to focus on just one. Today s families often do not offer the warm, safe haven of the traditional families. Many families are split in divorce, and often times, today s children have been through more than one divorce with their parents. It is a common occurrence for the children to be living with just their mother or just their father. Divorce is seen today as a solution to all marital problems rather than the exception as it was in the 1950 s. Not only do today s children have to deal with this idea of divorce, but they also have to deal with the idea of living with someone who is not...
