The Voice Behind the Rain
I can hear the rain. There is a quiet echo of a voice behind the rain, but I can t tell where exactly it s coming from. Slowly I open my eyes and see my mom, with tears in her eyes.
She is calling my name over, and over, Anna, Anna, wake up.
I begin to look around me now, there is shattered glass everywhere, and twisted metal. The steering wheel is hurting my mom, pressed hard against her legs. She can t move. I somehow manage to untangle myself from my seatbelt and open my door. When I move to get out, it takes me awhile to remember how to move my legs. Stepping out of the car, I look around me, expecting to see another mangled car, with more injured people in it. But all I see is a giant brown tree, now listing heavily to one side.
I run over to my moms door and quickly open it. Her head is peacefully resting back against her seat. Except for the steady line of blood dripping down her cheek she looks beautiful. She looks like she s sleeping, but she s not. She s dead.
I drag her out of the car and lay her in the soft, cold snow beside the car. I don t know what to do. I know she s dead, and now I don t know what to do.
So I scream, I scream until I have no voice left, and then I cry.
When I stop crying I look up and mom s not there anymore. There is a man in a yellow jacket there, talking to me. I can t hear what he s saying. I just nod. He picks me up and puts me in the back of a big orange and white van. He tells me to sit on the blue bench beside a bed. There is a long, black bag on the bed, all zipped up. My mommy s in that bag. We drive for awhile, and when we stop the man in the yellow jacket and a man in a blue jacket come and take my mom out. They don t have faces, just blank white spaces on their head. One starts to talk to me, through his invisible mouth, but all I hear are deep, mumbled groans. The man helps me out. They wheel the bed into a big building with glass doors that move by themselves. Above those doors I see a red and white sign that reads Hospital . I follow the men in, and they bring mom into a large, white room. A lady in a blue suit comes in and leads me out of the white room, and into a smaller yellow room. She asks me a lot of questions, and I hear her, but I don t answer them. Then she asks me if I hurt anywhere. I tell here that my heart hurts. And she laughs. I don t know why...
