Meanings of Hero The word hero has become an honor to be called, only a very few people ever achieve the hero status. Hero means a man of great courage or spirit, one who has undergone great danger or difficulty . (Webster 232) There are many examples of what a hero is, but the ones who stick out most are Hercules from ancient Mythology,and Jackie Robinson . The most notable hero in ancient Greece is Hercules. According to the Perseus Project, Hercules was both the most famous hero of ancient times and the most beloved. More stories were told about him than any other hero. Hercules was worshipped in many temples all over Greece and Rome. Zeus, Hercules' father, was the most powerful of the gods. That meant Zeus could do anything he pleased. Zeus fell in love with a beautiful Greek woman named Alcmene. When Alcmene's husband, Amphitryon, was away, Zeus got her pregnant (Perseus project). Hercules became a great hero with such adventures as rescuing Hesione, the princess of Troy from a dangerous sea monster. Hercules left for Troy only to find it in a state of crisis, as King Laomedon had cheated Poseidon and Apollo by failing to pay them for building the walls. For punishment Poseidon had sent a large sea monster, which would only be satisfied until it had devouring the princess, Hesione. Hercules bravely killed the beast by letting him be swallowed by the monster; he then killed it from the inside. Hercules also helped the Gods defeat the Giants for control of Mt. Olympus. The Giants were created by Earth and were told be frightening to look at. Their shaggy hair dropped from their heads and chins, and they had dragon scales on their feet (Perseus project). Long before the battle the gods had received an oracle, or prediction of the future. This oracle declared that the gods could kill the Giants only if they had the help of a mortal. This mortal was Hercules. Hercules eventually became immortal and joined the gods on Mt. Olympus. These stories of the great hero...
