Literature - Murder for Your Own Sake by Amir HajizadehWho can forget the fires blazing over local buildings during the LosAngeles Riots? Unfortunately the event did not take place too far offin the past. Although today we live in a nation that has abolishedslavery, the gap between the whites and the blacks during the earlystages of America s development has plainly carried into the present. In Native Son, author Richard Wright illustrates this racial gap, inaddition to demonstrating how white oppression of blacks can producerevengeful individuals; Bigger Thomas is one such individual. Biggerdiscovers his capacity to rebel through acts of murder against the whitesociety, which has for long oppressed his family, friends, and himself.Bigger s psyche from before the slaughter of Mary Dalton, on into hisfinal moments in jail contribute to his realization that he committedthe murders to create an identity for himself. An entire period of Bigger s life, up until the murder of Mary Dalton, portrays him under a form of slavery, where the white society governshis state of being. While he worked for the Daltons, "his courage tolive depended upon how successfully his fear was hidden from hisconsciousness"(44), and hate also builds on top of this fear. Once heis in contact with Mary, his fears and hate pour out in a rebellious actof murder, because to Bigger Mary symbolizes the white oppression. Inaddition, he committed the act, "because it had made him feel free forthe first time in his life"(255). At last he feels he is in control ofhis actions and mentality. He rebels against the burden of the whiteman s torment. He had "been scared and mad all . . . [his] life"(328),until he killed Mary. After this, he was not scared of anyone, anymore. Thus, the murder of Mary Dalton serves as a turning point inBigger s life, for it breaks him free of subservience to anyone otherthan himself, and it is the initial stage in creating an identity forhimself. Book three of the novel offers an emotional confusion within the mindof Bigger, which soon leads him to contrive a self-realization.Immediately one observes that "toward no one in the world did he(Bigger) feel any fear now"(254). This is a recent change in Bigger smind set. He knows that he has pushed himself to the limits, and he isin control of what he says and does. He tries firmly to "stifle allfeeling in him[self]"(262) when talking to his visitors in the jail,
