In this scene Hawthorne demonstrates theimportance of Dimmesdale having to acknowledge his personal sin and openly, the way thatDimmesdale climbs the scaffold and the thoughts that go through his tired mind of his self-condemnations for his weakness cause the near insanity that causes him to scream and almostcauses him to speak to Mr. Wilson.
