Memory Manipulations in Total Recall Total Recall is a film, which takes place far in the future. The main focus of the movie is the idea that technology has allowed people to be able to tamper with the memory of other individuals. Arnold Schwarzeneggar plays the main role of the person who's mind gets tampered with. In the film Arnold has a desire to visit Mars. So instead of actually going he decides have the memory of going planted in his head. So although physically he never went, in his mind he has real visions of going there. During the process while he is unconscious he begins to become out of control, entering a hyperactive fit. Eventually the Dr. gives him a shot to make him forget everything and he gets his money back and dropped of somewhere. On his way home people attempt to kill him and he can't figure out why. He arrives home and tells his wife about what happened, and then she attempts to kill him. In any case it turned out that he was a traitor for an evil controlling empire on Mars, and he was part of the mutants movement but had turned on them. His entire memory had been altered so that he did not remember the role he had played on Mars, his wife had been set up, and he was living a virtual life. Total Recall shows an interesting view towards the psychological view of long-term memory. Charles Morris defines long-term memory in our textbook as the portion of memory is more or less permanent and that corresponds to everything we "know." Charles Morris talks of two different kinds of long-term memory (LTM), semantic, and episodic memory. Total Recall primarily deals with the manipulation of episodic memory, which is the portion of long-term memory that stores more specific information that has personal meaning. For instance the fact that Arnold believed the woman who was his wife after his memory was altered, to actually be his wife is part of his episodic memory. I would assume that the people who manipulated his memories would have also had to install the semantic memory as well. This is the portion of long-term memory that stores general facts and information. Arnold would obviously have to have some recognition of current and past events that he would have learned in his lifetime. However it is the episodic memory that really plays the major role in the film. Arnold goes through a series of mind games that forces him to question what reality actually is. He is delivered a computer that is a video of him telling him what his real identity is and that the life he had been living was not his real one. He was also told of certain tasks he must do to save the people he was friends with on Mars, the mutants. So he begins his journey to accomplish these things because that is apparently what he was supposed to do before his memory was erased. In doing this he finally reaches the head of the only threat to the evil Mars Empire. He had to go through much convincing to the people who knew how to find this person. Arnold had apparently been a friend of the mutants, but had truly been a spy for the Mars Empire. When the mutants found out about this they did not trust hum anymore.
