Summary of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles DickensMatt Neighbors I. CharactersJarvis Lorry is a middle-aged banker at Tellson s bank. He is orderly and methodical in appearance and actions. He always conducts himself in a business like manner and does not allow his emotions to interfere at all. He does not have any children or spouse but treats the Manettes like family. Although he is very business like during his life he allows himself to become more and more emotionally involved with what is occurring around him.Sydney Carton seems to be a low self-esteemed, pitiful, and unhappy man on the exterior. On the interior he would do anything for a cause he loves. His bravery and heroic attitude will change himself and the lives connected to him forever. Although is a hopeless alcoholic, he is very humane and kind (shown when he holds the girls hand all the way to the guillotine to comfort her) and wants his life to be remembered. Lucie Manette is a young, pretty, blond haired, blue eyed girl who has been risen by a maid and had no family. Her inner character evolves throughout the novel beginning with the acceptance of her father s vitality. She grows and must mature very quickly from that point to be able to deal with the every day stress of helping to resurrected her father . Lucie is kind and protective and has a great deal of love to offer. She is devoted and always willing to help others.Doctor Manette was a well-respected doctor and then fell into trouble among nobility and was confined in a prison for more than fifteen years. He comes out of the prison and is confused and crazed when he arrives to meet his daughter and former friend at a wine shop. He evolves into a deeply caring and compassionate family man who is greatly respected and loved by others. He matures from his prisoner state and within three years can even visit jails like that which he was held in all those years. This takes great strength of character and determination to overcome such horrors.Charles Evr monde (called Darnay) is a man of great character and upbringing. Although he has denounced his family name and tried to forget his past it will continually haunt him. He is very smart and intellectual and tries to use all his resources to the best of his ability. He works as a tutor teaching others. He loves his wife Lucie with all his heart and would do anything to please her.C.J. Stryver is a fellow business partner of Sydney Carton. He is mid-thirties, stout, red, and bluff. He has a tendency to shoulder his way through obstacles. He will do anything to get ahead in life and does not drawback at opportunities. Stryver is a man who normally gets what he desires and when he does not he will make excuses so that it does not look like he has lost at anything.Monsieur Defarge is the owner of a wine shop in Saint Antoine, France. He has a wife and does well with his business. He is the leader of a revolt and a member of the secret jacquerie conspiring to overthrow the monarchy and nobility in France. Although he is implacable looking and sometimes acting he also has a heart and can be understanding and humane in desperate times. He can be easily overpowered by his wife, and he lets her influence greatly sway his thoughts and actions.Madame Defarge is a cold heartless woman but has reason for being this way. When she was a child her family was torn apart by nobility and she vows revenge on every one of them. Her rough troubles and times help create the horrible and emotionless woman that she has evolved to. This woman is powerful and extremely dominating. She is sometimes in lead of the revolts and is gruesome and ruthless when it comes to the lives of others. She gladly and savagely kills anyone standing in her way or anyone she despises. She also has great power in the jacquerie by her knitting. Her knitting is a code and log for all nobles and traitors names to be logged so they can be mercilessly killed.Mrs. Pross is the maid of Lucie Manette. She has raised the child since her parents died when she was young. She loves Lucie extensively and would do anything for her even murder. She is brave and compassionate. She has a heroic manner and is very humane. Jerry Cruncher is a messenger for Tellson s bank. His appearance is rather disturbing especially with hard spiky hair. He does odd jobs for the bank and at night works as a resurrection man digging up bodies and selling them to doctors. He changes his ways and does not dig up graves anymore. He is married and has one son who commonly works with him. He is not very smart but tries to be useful. II. SettingThe novel A Tale of Two Cities occurs in similar and dissimilar England and France. The Manettes live in Soho, England in a moderate house in 1775. It is quaint and sufficient for the just beginning family. In Saint Antoine, France where the Defarge s wine shop is located is the opposite and yet the same as England. In their likeness they are poverty stricken and ruled by corruption. They are set apart because France is on the edge of a revolution. They poverty stricken and impoverished common man is creating stirrings all around the country leading up to the revolt. The country where these people live is pathetic, they are so poor that they do not even have dogs and must feed their children and themselves grass to stay alive. The prison in which Charles is held captive is La Force. It is large, dark, and cold. One has the feeling that there are so many rooms that some may be so far off and secluded that someone may die from being forgotten about. The Manettes live in a small but suitable lodging high up above the street in a square of buildings that was mostly deserted. Lucie kept the home very neat and tidy and life was carried on suitable there. III. ThemesSacrifice is relinquishment of anything to help others in need. A person that sacrifices is one of high character, of the ultimate kindness, and thinks of others always before themselves. These deeds can never be fully forgotten but will live in the lives of those it has touched forever.When Lucie is young, she is thrown upon a situation whereupon she finds her father, whom she thought to be dead since her childhood, reappears in her life. She sacrifices her life as she knows it to be with the father the hardly knows and nurture him back to health. Mr. Lorry works so diligently at the bank that his dedication and sacrifice to the company have left him all alone with no wife and children. Sydney Carton gives the ultimate sacrifice anyone can ever give his life. Carton exudes bravery and inner-peace by allowing his life to be taken so that his beloved Lucie Manette can live with her husband. The power of love is the strongest of all emotions; it knows no bounds, it is the strongest of all emotions, and give limitlessly. Although challenged by hate and revenge love will always conquer over evil. The power of love can impel some people to do things they never thought themselves capable.The love Carton had for Lucie allowed him to give up his life simply to make his one and only love happy. Mrs. Pross murdered another human for the sake of her dearly beloved Ladybird and family. She would not normally do such a deed but the love and determination to save her loved ones compels her to do so. Though her husband is imprisoned Lucie Manette waits outdoors four hours every day rain or shine, so that he might possibly catch a glimpse of her. Although this may seem unimportant it shows that Lucie will do anything for her beloved Charles. Rebellion is an important act for self-independence but once revolt has occurred one must remember to become so caught up in the revolution to forget the cause of it all. Once this has occurred, all hope of gaining that which they began fighting for is lost. When the jacquerie begins the revolt against the monarchy and nobility because of the cruelty and corruption of the kingdom. But once they begin to kill and attack they become blood crazed . They go to far and become so caught up in the killing that they do not realize that they are hypocritically turning into what they fought against. The resurrection or recalled to life occurs when someone or something comes back after a long time from being dead . It does not have to be literal dead but dead in mind, dead in appearance, dead as in fake death. After resurrection has taken place the lives of people will change forever never becoming the same as once was.The major resurrection is Doctor Manette. He is saved from prison but his mind is still in a repressed state. So not only must he be resurrected physically from the prison but must be resurrected slowly and carefully mentally from the prison. Which is successfully accomplished due to his daughter s kindness and perseverance. Charles Darnay is resurrected from his death by the guillotine by Sydney Carton. Carton by doing this is actually resurrecting his own life by ending his life. Jerry Cruncher also helps resurrect by being a gravedigger and bringing bodies back to use through medical and scientific research. Revenge is ultimate form of hatred. Once vengeance is in someone s heart it is indelible. Many people avenge the lives of loved ones or how they themselves have been treated. People use revenge because they feel they must make someone else pay for their actions.When Gaspard young child is run over by the Marquis careless carriage and is yelled at because he should have taught his child better than to run in the street. The only thing Gaspard feels he can do to avenge his sons death is to kill the Marquis. The common day people of France are treated extremely poorly and cruel and they seek revenge on all nobility. They feel they must make them pay the price for making them suffer for such a long time. They accomplish this with a revolution and change forever the way life in France is. XI. PlotIn the year 1775, a man named Jarvis Lorry, a teller for Tellson s bank, is travelling to Dover, England to meet Lucie Manette. Once there he tells her of her father, which believes died when she was young and how he is still alive and in a wine-shop Saint Antoine, France under the care of the Defarges. They travel there only to find he is mentally disturbed by the long period he has spent in prison. Lucie undertakes the job of nurturing him back to physical and mental health.Back in London, Lucie and Lorry testify for a suspected spy, Charles Darnay. He is released and everyone is happy. Lucie also meets Sydney Carton (who looks oddly like Charles) and his pompous business partner C.J. Stryver.Lucie and Mr. Lorry are finally beginning to see improvements in the condition of Doctor Manette and how his condition is...
