Europe s Total War June 28, 1914, the day on which Austria s Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated is commonly cited as the start of World War I. How could this one incident ignite a war which would bring an entire continent into conflict? The seeds for the war were actually sown much earlier, stemming from allegiances and obligations from numerous alliances. The absence of a major conflict in Europe for an extended period of time leading up to World War I left an interval of time long enough for newer improvements in technology which changed the way wars were fought. This total war was the result of the diplomatic and technological advances leading up to its actual inception. Germany and Austria had a Dual Alliance, whereby they agreed to protect other if attacked by Russia, but to otherwise stay out of the other s affairs with other countries. After the assassination, Germany promised Austria support if they attacked Serbia. Russia sympathized with Serbia, as both countries were of Slavic origin. France made a similar promise to Russia, support in the event of a war, and Britain supported France. Germany wanted to keep Britain neutral, yet at the same time, Germany was engaging in a naval arms race with Britain. Austria declared war on Serbia a month later, even though their army was not ready. Austria quickly mobilized against Russia, while Germany waited for Russia to enter the war as the aggressor. Within a day of Russia s entry into the war, Germany invaded Belgium in order to attack France. Germany s hopes of keeping Britain neutral were ended because they violated Belgian neutrality, which Britain had pledged to protect. A few days later, Britain entered World War I. By the war s end four years later, the conflict involved countries on three continents, with nations such as the United States and Japan taking part in what started out as a European war.
