Like the novel itself, approaching ambiguity in Henry Jame's The Turn of The Screw can either yield fruitful results or a barren and ineffective reading of the work. Certainly ambiguity is one of the novel's most potent achievements, however in order for this effect to deepen our understanding of life as literature should do, it need not be necessary to discern whether or not the ghosts were real, the governess was hallucinating or valiantly protecting the children, or whether the children were exemplary and obedient kids or corrupt cruel juveniles. An examination such as this could go on endlessly in circles and yet still provide no rich answers. James himself was exploring issues of good and evil and specifically an explanation for the unjust influence of evil on innocence. Approaching the novel's ambiguity as an exposition on the nature of evil and answering instead the question of what the ambiguity in the novel itself trying to say - what is its purpose, then becomes a more productive method for edifying analysis. Foremost, ambiguity is a statement about the complex nature of reality itself. At a base level, reality can never be received with full objective credibility, but rather is always perceived through a personality, character or subject with biases, complexities, and prejudices. Since lies and deception are at the very heart of the nature of evil, a discussion of ambiguity in the context of evil necessarily becomes a discussion of characters' perceptions, and whether or not the subjects perceptions are deceptive, or rather even to what degree a character deceiving others or him or herself. It is in an analysis of the characters within The Turn of the Screw that we can determine the real answer regarding ambiguity and evil. Whether or not the governess saw ghosts could never be truly determined, but we can say some things with confidence regarding her relationship to the other characters in the story, her background, her personality, her inner and outer world, her environment and circumstances, and her reactions. As a method to approach The Turn of the Screw's ambiguity, a study the story's character matrix provides answers regarding the perception of reality and the place and nature of evil in human existence.
