Depression and its Treatment Depression is a common disorder and will probably affect someone you know in your lifetime. Major depression affects at least 10% of the population at some stage in their lifetime, and even larger percentages suffer from mild or moderate depression. According to John H. Greist, M.D. and James W. Jefferson, M.D, in their book "Depression and Its Treatment", 5% of the population has serious depression at any given point in time. It is very important to be able to recognize the symptoms so you may be able to advise a friend, relative or even yourself to seek professional help. For this reason it is extremely important to know what depression is and what treatments there are to cure this common and sometimes deadly mental illness. When mental professionals diagnose depression, they mean "a disorder of sufficient length, with specific symptoms and signs, that substantially interferes with a person's functioning or that causes great personal distress or both"(Greist and Jefferson, p.1). Everyday "blues" or sadness is not considered depression. Grief of the loss of a loved one is also not considered depression. These emotions are short-lived symptoms of depression but continue to function normally without treatment. These are normal emotions that everyday people often have, so don't be so quick to go and send your kids or your annoying elderly parents off to the insane asylum. These are just common feelings people will have every now and then. People who suffer from depression usually lose interest or pleasure in activities that they are use to doing. Depressed thinking often involves negative thinking about yourself and everything that going on around you. Sufferers of depression also complain of "poor concentration, poor memory, and difficulty making decisions"(Griest and Jefferson, p.2). Anxiety often occurs and as well as exaggerated fears about situations in the person's life. The most extreme symptom or behavior of depress ion is suicide. This is why it is so important to treat this mental illness so death can be prevented. So what causes depression? Depression can be caused by a combination of factors, which unfortunately you really can't control. Inheritance, genetics, developmental factors, psychological factors and stress are all factors that can cause depression. Each person has a certain threshold to protect them from depression at a certain point in time. Genetic factors are very important in cases of depression. If an identical twin has depression there is a 70% chance that the other twin will also have depression (p.10). Children, parents and siblings of a depressed person have a 15% chance of developing depression. Environmental stresses such as financial problems, new jobs or legal problems are also common causes of depression. There is still a lot to learn about the causes of depression. Just because you experience one of these risk factors does not mean you are depressed. Many people experience many of these factors and are never depressed. Others who suffer from none of these factors may be severely depressed. If you are depressed and it causes a long-term interference in social activities, intimate relationships, education and occupational activities, it is highly recommended that you be treated for depression. Just like there are many factors that cause depression there are many treatments for the mental illness. Almost all people who suffer from depression can be treated successfully. It is sad that people who go untreated have hard lives, when with treatment they could have a very normal happy life. Psychotherapy, antidepressant medications and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), are the major forms...
