The Battle of the SexesWho Holds the Power? The battle of the sexes has been a war fought amongst the sexes for many years. In the beginning males had all the power. They could everything while women had to do household work because women were considered inferior to men. Women were also controlled and owned by men. However all of that has changed around the nineteenth century. In the novel Sons and Lovers and plays Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Doll s House show how the role of women has changed. All three of these deal with who hold the power men or women. In Sons and Lovers written by D.H. Lawrence the man character is named Paul Morel. He is the third child of Walter and Gertrude Morel and has an older brother named William. In the story Mrs. Morel was of middle class and marries a man of lower class. By doing this see throws away all of her dreams. Mr. Morel is portrayed as drunk who loves to annoy the family. Neither one can change for each other so Mrs. Morel lives through her two sons. Thus she controls their emotions. In the story William falls in love with a girl named Lily and Mrs. Morel does not like her. This weighs heavily on William s mind and eventually leads to his death. William s death causes Mrs. Morel to forget about her other son Paul. Ever since he was born he had a different relationship with his mother as opposed to what the other kids had with her. Paul lives for his mother. He would rather die than disappoint her (Lawrence 1913, 88) While Mrs. Morel was still in a daze over the death of William, Paul became ill and brought Mrs. Morel back to life. After this Mrs. Morel puts all of her energy into Paul. This has a negative effect on Paul because his mother controls all of his emotions. This is shown when he starts to date Miriam. He loves her and wants to marry her but his mother disapproves of her and he can not experience passion with her. When he meets Clara a married women who wants independence and whom his mother approves of her and he feels the passion that he didn t feel with Miriam. Paul loves all three women but his mother the most, and all want to control him. Mrs. Morel already controls his emotions and this is shown with the disapproval of Miriam and while Paul is having a conversation with her. I ll never marry while I ve got you (Lawrence 1913, 300) Mrs. Morel feels that Miriam is taking her spot in Paul s life and fears that he might die like William. Miriam want s to control Paul spiritually and this causes conflict with Mrs. Morel. Clara wants to control Paul physically. While all of this is happening Mrs. Morel develops a tumor and Paul s feelings for the other two women in his life is dashed aside to be with her. However, when she dies Paul tries to gain independence from the control that his mother had over his emotions. In the play Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
