In The novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kessey, there are many different mythological archetypes. These include R.P. McMurphy as a trickster, and a hero, Nurse Ratched thought of as The Great Mother, and villain. After a short amount of reading it becomes quite clear that R.P. McMurphy is portrayed as a trickster. McMurphy has many "Grand Schemes", but is unaware of the effects on himself or others. An excellent example of this is how McMurphy tries to make the other patients normal by taking them on the boating trip, and Nurse Ratched gets the patients to get mad at him accusing him of only wanting money. McMurphy also shows signs of extreme intelligence. One Example of his intelligence would be how by boosting Chief Bromden's self-esteem, he made the Chief believe that he actually was becoming more muscular, and bigger. It is quite clear that R.P. McMurphy is also a hero. Not only does Billy Babbit come out and say McMurphy is a hero, but he has many traits of a hero. Two traits are expressed in the same incident when he tries to murder Nurse Ratched. He is facing death, because he knew that if he killed her, he would be killed by the court, or killed by Nurse Ratched with a lobotomy. The other trait expressed here was selflessness. According to Chief Bromden, "We were the ones making him do it. It wasn't the nurse that was forcing him, it was our need that was making him push himself slowly up from sitting "(Page 267). He also had many quests throughout the novel. One quest he was on was to escape the hospital, another to get permission to go boating, and to watch the World Series.
