Fourth Speech Final Format General Purpose: To define, inform & hopefully get a couple chuckles. Working Thesis Statement: There are good drivers and bad drivers . We should all strive to be a good, safe and courteous driver. Specific Purpose: My specific purpose is to inform the audience what my definitions of good and bad drivers are, affect them to pay closer attention when driving and improve their skills if necessary. Introduction: Attention Getter: WATCH OUT!!! You almost hit that car!!! The car swerves violently, as brakes squeal and you smell the stench of burning rubber. Your heart s now racing, and you re breaking out in a cold sweat It was a close call, but everyone s ok. No damage done.Psychological Orientation: Hey we ve all been a passenger in this situation. Heck, I ll bet most of us have even been the driver a time or two. But, there s a big difference between making an occasional mistake which we all do because we re human, and being a menace to society on our public highways and byways. I m sure that I m not alone when I say, I am tired of the idiots and incompetents on the road today. Are you with me? Can I get an I m tired of it! ??? Logical Orientation: GOOD!!! In the next couple of minutes, I m going to share with you my definition of both good and bad drivers. Then, I d like to tell you about a few (and I emphasize) A FEW of my pet peeves about some not-so-smart drivers. (By the way I have my suspicions that they re not so bright even when they re NOT behind the wheel.)And finally I d like to conclude with a couple of suggestions that we all can follow to become safer drivers. Main Points:I. What exactly are good drivers and bad drivers ? Well, let s start with a widely accepted definition of a good driver.Definition: A good driver is a person who operates a vehicle with skill and does not engage in unsafe driving practices. The person knows his or her limitations, as well as the vehicle s. Furthermore, generally through experience, the driver is able to anticipate potential problems, and take evasive action BEFORE becoming involved in a hazardous situation.Statistic: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (since that s such a long bureaucratic title, let s just call them the Feds from now on). Anyway, according to the Feds, young, inexperienced drivers (that includes people between the ages of 15 to 20) account for ONLY 6.7% of the licensed drivers in the U.S. However, this age group is involved in OVER 40% of the total fatal accidents while speeding or recklessly operating a vehicle. What does that mean? EXPERIENCE DOES MATTER !Definition: What is a BAD driver? The best way to define a poor driver is to look at a few examples of some of the unsafe characteristics of BAD drivers.Example: (a) When there s traffic behind them (especially on Highway 101) they drive 8-10 miles per hour SLOWER than the posted speed limit.Statistic: Most of us have been annoyed by this. But, not only is this habit frustrating to other drivers, it s EXTREMELY dangerous. According to the Feds, in 1996 crashes in rural areas accounted for 59% of all traffic fatalities Now the Feds report continues on ad nauseum describing the different types of crashes. However, the most interesting conclusion is that you are more than 20% more likely to be involved in an accident on a two-lane road following an excessively slow driver. What s the biggest reason? Simple someone inevitably gets frustrated and executes an unsafe passing maneuver, or the slow driver does NOT responsibly allow other drivers to pass safely.Examples: (b) How about these other annoying and sometimes dangerous practices? If for some reason they need to pull over they wait until a car is approaching to try to merge back on. Reading, or putting on makeup while driving. When approaching a yield sign, they either accelerate without looking or come to a full and complete stop.Personal Testimony: (There s one of these near my home on 56th street I cringe every time I see a car approach the yield sign. Then I do something NOT required by law. I turn on my blinker so that they know I am continuing on to the left which is directly where they would merge if they didn t stop.)

 When driving in a lane that is going to end because of construction, they ignore all the "LANE CLOSED...
