The Glass Menagerie The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams is a play that is very similar to modern society. The events that occur in this play are very likely to happen in the 1990's rather than the 1940's. It is not only the events in this play that are similar to modern times; it is also the yearning, or the feelings that the characters portray. In scene one Amanda Wingfield remembers her "gentlemen callers". She is very proud of this and brags about how popular she was. She just simply chose the wrong one because her husband left her. In the 1940's it was not as common as now to have your husband leave you. Amanda brags of how her "gentlemen callers" would leave her money and other things in their will's when they past away because they were all in love with her. Amanda deals with the pain of her husband leaving her in this way. All she has to hold on to is her past, and thinking that she could have had any man she wanted, (whether it was true or not), confronted her. Another situation that occurs in this play, which is relevant to modern times, is when Amanda finds out her daughter has dropped out of typing school. She found out in scene two when Amanda went to the school to tell them Laura was sick and she would be out for awhile. All of this time Laura had been leaving the house and pretending to attend typing school, but instead, she had been going for long "walks" in the park. In today's society, many students go on to school after completing high school, yet some students are just not meant for it. In Laura's case she did not think she was meant for it either. But as many children feel today, she did not want to disappoint her mother. So after dropping out, she continued to pretend that she was attending school everyday. Dropping out of school is growing more common...
